Here I was allowed to sing, produce, edit, mix and even co-compose, the whole package. On this Maybebop album, I paid a lot of attention to tonal diversity. In other words, the voices were only doubled or tripled during production where it made absolute sense for the sound. The microphone selection changed from voice to song to function. Live tracks also fit into the overall sound of the record.

What I particularly enjoy is breathing life into ballads like “John Maynard” or “Alles das kann nur Musik” (“Only music can do all of this”) in the studio, where the tempo doesn’t just tick through at x BPM, but is orientated towards the version sung live.

I record the ensemble live, “steal” the tempo and put it back into the recording software with a click and piano accompaniment. This gives us a lot of life when recording in the studio and also the freedom to sing to the live recording or the piano playback.
